Case Study: Building Project
Heage Windmill
Contract  Heage Windmill and Drying Kiln Restoration
Client Derbyshire County Council
Engineer Robert Bacon Architect
Contract Value  £75,000
Carried out Late Summer 2001

Description
A restoration project carried out to offer the only working six sailed windmill in the UK. The adjacent drying kiln was in a dilapidated state which was practically rebuilt to provide the meeting room, shop and welfare facilities for the visitor’s attraction.

The top section of the windmill structure had to be demolished and rebuilt to provide firm bearing and support for the new cap and sails. Two thirds of the structure was repointed with a matched lime mortar to overcome previous water ingress due to its exposed location.

All work was done under the close supervision of English Heritage with all building stone quarried and dressed on site to provide an identical match to the existing structures.
