To comply with the ever changing legislative requirements of our industry, we have developed a top down approach to the management of health and safety, whereby the Company Health and Safety Director ensures that each individual Contract Manager responsible for a project is equipped to manage projects safely.
Not withstanding the size of the project, whether it is covered by The Construction (Design and Management Regulations) 2007, or work of a more simple nature for a short duration, part of the Contract Manager’s role will be to write a Health and Safety Plan.
This will take the form of a Method Statement/Hazard Identification leading to the formulation of a Safe System of Work. Unlike many other organisations, we do not ‘grade’ risk into “low” or “high” categories, but attempt to reduce or eliminate all hazards whatever the degree of risk.
We train all Contract Managers to Nebosh Construction Certificate standard together with some Site Foreman having undertaken the 5 day CITB Site Managers course.
All site personnel are holders of the ECTIB Passport to Safety, and the company is now over 90 % compliant with the industry target of a fully qualified workforce through the CSCS card scheme.
Each year we employ one or two apprentices, usually joiners or bricklayers, who we aim to develop into the Foreman of tomorrow. Continued academic progression of apprentices is encouraged to HND and degree level.
Those site staff who have not gained a NVQ level 2 through a recognised apprentice scheme, are working towards this award through a process of on site assessment.
We have a fully developed training plan for the Company, with most site staff trained to CPCS standard for dumpers and roller operation, and Slinger/Signaller. We continue to update training as required in Confined Spaces, Excavation Assessment, Asbestos Awareness and the Use and Erection of Mobile Scaffold Towers.
All sites and projects that are over two weeks in duration are inspected twice monthly by our consultants, The Building Safety Group Limited. This ensures that all sites are inspected by an objective third party, and instances of non-compliance to set standards provide useful data for benchmarking our yearly performance.
We have been assessed for three years running as a CHAS compliant contractor, and we continue to be responsive to industry, regulation and client led standards in health and safety management.
